Nilandhoo

Nilandhoo is the capital of Faafu Atoll, a region with five inhabited islands. It is the largest and most populated island in the region and includes historical sites such as foah'mathi and Aasaari Miskiy and a school. Foah'mathi is a historical site with a Buddhist temple under it, while Aasaari Miskiy is the second mosque built in the Maldives.

A beautiful charming island has local eateries and shops, a small market, a pharmacy, a large playground for children, an outdoor gym for adults and a hospital.

As for other side of the island Nilandhoo is a paradise, virgin beach, delightful inhabitants, exotic fruits, singing birds, the world's largest bats - just tropic idyll with unforgettable music of palm trees and the ocean.

The locals on the island are so friendly, smile, always saying 'hello'. The children are the sweetest and as you walk around the island and become familiar with everyone, you feel like a part of the community.

Fishing is the main source of economy on Nilandhoo. The island has 26 mechanized vessels, 8 bokkura used for fishing, 1 yacht Dhoni and 2 sathari dhoni used to travel between island and Male. Other than fishing, residents of the island engage in agriculture, construction, education, government jobs and resort constructions.

The island is famous for producing agricultural products like:  Dried fish, Salted fish, Rihaakuru, Dhiyaa hakuru, Thatch, Watermelon, Cucumber, Pumpkin and squash, Chile and curry leaves, Kale and Kang kong, Banana, Curry leaves, Guava, Mango

There are few Shops where you can buy soft drinks, biscuits and also there are few local Cafe's from where you can enjoy local and some international dishes at low price including Hedhi-ka which is name for local short eats which the cafes serve at low price including Coffee, tea varieties of juices.

Do not forget to bring your own snorkeling gears and suntanning lotions though they are available to buy from the local shops in the island. Water Sports facilities and Diving facilities are available for rent from some of the Guest Houses. It is advisable to check type of water sports facilities available at the time of booking.

Also during the festive periods  like Eid period, Independent day holiday period, Republic day holiday period, school holidays and during new year period most of the islands will celebrate with special traditional dance, sports, live-music on the island; traditional dances, cooking of tradition local foods. If you plan to make holiday during any of the Festive Period, it is advisable to check in advance any special events scheduled in the island during these special holiday period.
